22 hours ago View post My beloved Gulf. This photo shows a rare and endangered sperm whale living in and around one of the most intensive offshore drilling areas in the world only 70 miles from the Mississippi coast. These sperm whales are a group of all females with their young. We saw a baby. Their story has never truly been told. Most people don’t even know we have them. No one studies them - aside from the obligatory federal NOAA stock assessment every 5-10 years. My heart is telling me that it is time. Time to tell their story and study them. It’s complicated and there is no funding. I’m going to figure out a way.

A kind local doctor is an avid offshore fisherman with a super nice vessel. He’s taking us out to do a marine mammal survey at the most amazing biodiversity spot in the Gulf. Where the Mississippi River meets the gulf. There are 21 species of marine mammals in the northern gulf including an endangered group of resident sperm whales that hunt for giant squid. Never a guarantee that we will see anything but you never know unless you go. I’ll be back Sunday. Beavers are good including sprout. Spoiler alert- blossom did great. We are prepping the enclosure by the pond for windy and willow and will be soft releasing them soon. Blossom will continue to go back and forth for a while. If windy and willow stay in the area after they are released then that will give them and blossom more space to interact.VideoAugust 1Public 0 15So happyJuly 31ArticleJuly 31$5 tier & up 43 10Home!July 30ArticleJuly 30$5 tier & up 50 28BerthaEveryone at Something Wild are prepped and ready for Bertha.
