We often hear about silicon as the main alternative to carbon, but I have also come across mentions of boron and germanium and other atoms as potential building blocks for alien biochemistries. The challenge is that, beyond silicon, there’s very little scientific literature to go on. So far, I haven’t found any peer-reviewed papers that seriously explore alternatives outside carbon or silicon, but if you happen to know of any, please let me know.
