In my experience, if you go off the rails while writing a novel, you can usually tear out the bad parts and keep plowing ahead. Try that with a short story and you risk breaking the thing entirely. He told our poetry class that no writer has anything important to say before age 40. I believe that still holds pride of place as the stupidest thing I've ever heard anyone say about writing. He was also jealous of Franz Kafka because his (the prof's) name also started with a K, and he felt that Kafka had "usurped" the letter.
