Article Latest postPublicA hand saw and a little insanity goes a long way

My wife is not a fan of me using my chainsaw when no one is with me, so some days I do some cutting with my hand saw. The lower branches of these large cedars have been bugging me for a while now, so I went to work on them with a saw and a bit of muscle. Now the wind can blow more freely onto the sand ridge, and the area looks much more open.

Fall 2017 - Sand Ridge ProgressI was excited when I found out the NAIP program would be updating their aerial photos for Iowa in 2017, so I could see some progress on the sand ridge. I posted their aerial previously, but Google Maps recently updated with photos from later in the year, that are much higher quality. The left photo was taken in the summer, and the right one would have been going into the Fall.ImageFeb 27, 2018Public 0 0Sand Ridge - 2015 vs 2017NAIP photographs for 2017 were taken in September. We have pushed further to the West (left) than is shown here, but I have to use the most recent aerial photos available.ImageDec 21, 2017Public 0 02017-12-19 - Tour of the Sand RidgeDec 20, 2017 View post An update on our progress at the sand ridge.ArticleDec 20, 2017Public 0 0It's Cedar Cutting Season!Jim and I headed out to the sand ridge on Saturday to put his new chainsaw to use. We cleared out a pretty large area, more than I thought we would actually. I'll head back up in the coming weeks to pile up the downed trees for burning.ArticleDec 12, 2017Public 0 0What Lassie? Some of them have formed an alliance with the Honeysuckle, which tries to protected them by growing around their trunks and making it hard to get to them. Time with chainsaws is limited, so I used the brush cutter today to clear out around the bottom of some trees, to make them easier cut down on what ever day we get out to do it.Imagetoday at Aug 19 crawlPublic 0 2Still cleaning up on the sand ridgeView post Sometimes, the work that gets done doesn't seem obvious in pictures. The picture from today may look like the picture from the 27th, but they are different. The easiest thing to notice is the lack of dead leaves back in the area as you look towards the grain bins. There was also a dead tree to the left of that. That's not all that was done though. After an area is cut, there is a lot of fallen trees and woody brush on the ground. I clean up a lot of it to make the area easier to re-cut when things sprout back up. There was some dead logs on the ground in this picture that made it difficult to cut the first time, but they were easier to see now and I cleaned them up and tossed themArticletoday at Aug 19 crawlPublic 0 0Opening up new areas on the sand ridgeThis area on top of the sand ridge doesn't have many large trees, so cutting the brush will make a huge difference. According to one of the neighbors, there are a few cactus plants hidden in here. Hopefully I can find them again as I clean out the area.ArticleSep 27, 2017Public 0 0Training vision models...Sep 27, 2017 View post These graphs depict the accuracy of a neural network for identifying amphibians and reptiles from images. I am currently training a model to identify just the species found in Iowa, to see it can be when localizing the data set. This is being trained on voucher photos from HerpMapper, along with some of my photos from in the state of Iowa. There is a lack of photos with some species, and some voucher photos are not great, but I am glad to see the accuracy going higher than the initial tests when a training was done with all herp mapper vouchers for all species we had records for.ArticleSep 27, 2017Public 0 0
