The goal here is not musical perfection. I hesitate to say it's even musical proficiency. This is good, old-fashioned entertainment at my expense.
$35/moDear DiaryCover songs are all well and good. I can put on a happy face and sing a goofy song and you'll never hear me complaining. However, on the flip side, I also write original material. Some of it is out there in the world on iTunes and Spotify.
Most of it though, (we're talking at least 70% of it) exists in notebooks, journals, cell phones, and napkin scraps scattered throughout my apartment. These are little morsels of musical meals; the precursors to songs that have yet to be (and likely will never be) written. Strange as it may seem, I find these to be the most personal and meaningful of what I write. They're often sloppy, half-formed ideas born out of foggy mornings or blurry nights that creep their way out of the deeper parts of my subconscious and onto the page. They end up being lyrical snapshots of fleeting moments. A chance encounter with a college student in Bath, UK or a pair of grieving parents mourning the death of their 30 year old son weeks before his wedding in Nevada. The way the traffic thunders through the Central Valley on a summer morning or the freneticism of a river rapid in Northern California.
These are often embellishments and echos of real moments I've experienced over the years that have been filtered and haphazardly spit-shined by whatever mindset I happened to be in at the time I jotted them down. My hope is to release these fragments from time to time. I'm convinced that sometimes I talk myself out of writing a song because a particular lyric or mu
