New Video! Making Formvar Plastic In this video, I make a unique plastic called Polyvinyl Formal (AKA Formvar). This plastic is uniquely suitable to electron microscopy, and can be easily formed into nanometer-thin sheets. I plan to use this material in an upcoming SEM to TEM conversion of my electron microscope. This will allow me to image new types of materials, notably organic materials like cells. It is a solvent uniquely well-suited to many chemical reactions, due to its ability to tolerate strong acids and bases, its ability to dissolve many difficult materials, and its wide compatibility with other solvents (both polar and nonpolar).
