Despotes was a rank first created by Emperor Manuel I for Bela III of Hungary, his intended heir. In the Late Byzantine period, the title was flexibly applied from sons of Emperors to local rulers of independent realms; but whoever received the title was someone of exceptional distinction.

The Despot of Morea was a Palaiologan title, given to later members of the imperial family to rule over the Roman possessions in the Peloponnese. Usually these despots were younger sons of Emperors, and they served as the Despot as a sort of training for if they ever take the throne in Constantinople. Mystra, the capital of the despotate, flourished in arts and letters, as the Morea was one of the last places of refuge for Roman scholars fleeing the war and hardships plaguing Rhomania proper: Gemistos Plethon, Laonikos Chalkokondyles, among many other illustrious minds, were close associates of the Morean despots.

The Empire of Thessaloniki was a brief Roman state after 1204, constituted when the ruler of Epirus, Theodoros Komnenos Doukas, conquered Thessaloniki from the Latins. He declared himself Emperor and was crowned, then rapidly returned much of the Balkans under Roman rule... until his fall from grace due to hubris. Two more members of the Komnenodoukas Dynasty assumed this title before the Nicaeans conquered them and reduced them to despots. The quick decline of the Thessalonican state does injustice to the image of the Empire, which was a vibrant Roman cultural and political center during its existence. And note that "Emperor of Thessaloniki" is a historiographical term, in reality the Komnenodoukai saw themselves as legitimate "Emperors of the Romans".

It references the Komnenian Roman Emperors who ruled in exile in the Pontos region, with their capital in Trebizond. There, they survived for more than 200 years in an increasingly more Turkified Eastern Anatolia through their sheer wit and adaptability, all the while still building the most magnificent of churches decorated with splendid art.
