Leaping Carp ModificationJune 27 View post The result of today's stream, I built most of set 80120 Prosperity Carp Leaping, and modified it to make the third carp move as well. I really liked this set. Even though the mechanics are simple, it's packs a lot of visual punch. The third carp attached to the base is just static, so I obviously had to modify it so it moved at least a little bit. :)ArticleJune 27Public 0 1Walking AT-AT InstructionsJune 15 2603walkingATAT.pdf 2603walkingATATparts.bsxArticleJune 15$2 tier & up 0 0Swimming DucksJune 12 View post The result of today's stream, I built 40885 Duck Family and made them all go for a swim. A line of gear plates runs along the back, with pistons to control each duck. With the three different sized gear plates, there are three options for swimming frequency. The one at the back is driven by the smallest gear, so is swimming the fastest, and the mamma in front is driven by the largest gear, so is swimming the slowest. It's very simple, but I feel it results in a nice effect. Here's a photo of the drive train without the water and ducks....ArticleJune 12Public 0 5Rocking PlantsThe result of today's stream, I built the Rocking Plants set and started to put the band together. I still need to animate the other two (bass and keyboard) and build some kind of stage for them to perform on. Maybe that will happen during next week's stream.Imagetoday at Aug 24 crawlPublic 0 0'Spinning' Naboo StarfighterIn the honor of Star Wars day, I rebuilt my Special Edition Naboo Starfighter on stream and decided to try to make it 'spin'.ArticleMay 4Public 0 0Catching Butterflies PrototoypeApril 10 View post The result of today's stream, I built set 77047 Bunnie's Outdoor Activities and made the character try to catch butterflies. This probably won't turn into anything, but it's an interesting little mechanism and I had a lot of fun putting it together.ArticleApril 10Public 0 1Swimming Fierce Shark InstructionsApril 8ArticleApril 8Public 0 0Walking Astronaut Prototype 2April 3 View post The result of today's live stream, I finished making the Up-Scaled Astronaut 'walk'. It actually ended up being easier than I expected, due to some happy accidents in trying to fit the gears into the tight space of the hips. I would prefer to have the legs and arms not be synchronized, but that will likely require more gearing, which I don't think will fit. Maybe some of the existing gearing can be modified to achieve the same result, but I'm not too optimistic, again due to the space limitations. There really aren't a lot of options on where to put the gears. It was a cool technical challenge, and I'm pretty happy with the result!ArticleApril 3Public 0 0Animated Spaceman PrototypeMarch 27 View post The result of today's stream, I started adding some animation to the Up-Scaled Blue Astronaut Minifigure (set 40921). The original model has independently poseable arms, but the head doesn't rotate. I managed to add an internal gearing system to connect the head and arms, so they move in sequence, and of course stuck a motor on the back to move them. Next time, I'll tackle the legs. Hopefully it won't be too hard to get them moving in sequence as well.ArticleMarch 27Public 0 0Sarlacc Pit PrototypeMarch 13 View post The result of today's live stream, I built the Sarlacc Pit from set 75396 and motorized the 'play feature'. It's pretty weak as far as play features go, but it doesn't look too bad when it's motorized. I tried to make it at least a little more interesting by putting them out of phase - one side cycles 1.66 times the other, thanks to a 20 to 12 tooth gear reduction. I had some ideas to expand on the movement, opening and closing the beak and making the tentacles rotate as well. Incorporating those might happen in a future stream, or maybe they will show up in a future model.ArticleMarch 13Public 0 0Swimming Dolphins Prototype 2March 6 View post The result of today's stream, I managed to get both dolphins swimming. It's looking pretty good, and I'm happy with the current state of the mechanics. I think the drive system could use a bit of redesign, to bury it more deeply in the base, and it definitely needs some decorations from the original set to be incorporated.ArticleMarch 6Public 0 7
