I began this after the 2024 election, but put it aside until I was functioning enough to write. I restarted it on Sept 10, 2025, but had to put it away again. I'm giving it to you now, even though it doesn't feel finished to me. I have early memories of my father telling me, “Toughen up, Jennifer,” which is a whole thing I could go into, but I’ll save it for my therapist. The point is, he frequently described me as “soft,” but now that I’m an adult I know that even at a young age what he hated to see in me -- and anyone else -- was empathy and humanity, because he thought it signaled weakness.
