Image Latest post€1 tier & upCommentary on Downcast Eyes by Martin Jay

Reading Martin Jay’s introduction, I was immediately aware that the author is probably not a philosopher, which was pleasantly noticeable in his style of writing. He documents, contextualises, and uses actual examples rather than arguing a single abstract point into oblivion. It was an unexpectedly enjoyable read. Especially the first page, where he self-referentially demonstrates how visual metaphors saturate language, had me smiling...

That was, in a way, an act of practicing the “Mut zur Lücke” Charlotte Matter recently spoke about, something that doesn’t come easily to me as a deaf person. I am used to preparing obsessively, compensating for the information I might otherwise miss. Bild und KritikThe viewer is also repeatedly reoriented. At moments, one looks down at the works; elsewhere, one must look up, stand beneath, walk around, or pass by near them. In Sarah Ahmed's "Queer Phenomenology", orientation concerns how bodies inhabit space, what they can reach, what becomes available, and how spaces direct bodily action.[5]White's exhibition does not simply present objects to be seen; it makes spectatorship itself unstable.ArticleJune 19Public 0 0
