In 1636 the last great Wendat Feast of the Dead was held. The Wendat Confederacy only had a few years left before the devastation of the diseases brought by European colonizers and the war with the Haudenosaunee brought the Wendat to their knees. The Jesuit priest, Jean de Brebeuf recorded the events and his admiration for the ritual in the Jesuit Relations which is where we get much of the information about this particular ceremony and a greater insight into the Wendat world as it was on the precipice of disaster...

Itâs easy to look back at early Canadian history and run through the explorers as the ones who founded Canada. We start with Cartier as âdiscoveringâ the St. Lawrence, and then we have Champlain founding Quebec and what will become Canada one day. But that simplistic look at someone like Champlainâs legacy makes for a rather boring story. Learning about the early history of New France has been fascinating for me and so has understanding how Champlainâs legacy has been shaped by historians and others looking for Canadian heroes.
