Longing for Lilacs I feel the full longing of the moment, carried by a breeze, offering me the achingly sweet scent of warm lilac, free and radiant. Every spring they bloomed in a wild tangle across our back fence. Bees would stumble along them, fat and happy with pollen. I'd press the side of my face to the fence so I could peer down at the steep brook below and just make out its babble. The brook bifurcated our hilly, somewhat mysterious street of wayward Victorian homes from the main street of town. It created an oddly removed feeling to the street that I remember in a dreamlike, hazy, way.
