The site was littered with cellophane wrappers, broken bobbins, and (weirdly) a lot of half-burnt polyester clothes. The fire pit was overfilled with soggy ash. Poison ivy grew in a wide glossy swath at the woodland edge. The well-mannered roughneck from this post had his radio going and his hands empty, ready for a day of nothing in the shade. Down the hill, young adults with silly pool toys and too many coolers were already enjoying their long holiday weekend on the water.
