Coming from the fighting game community, I was always used to pools. You would enter a tournament, be assigned a pool number and that is where you would play. You would play in a double elimination bracket that consisted of only players in your pool. If you won that bracket, you would be declared the winner of that pool. Once all pools were finished, each winner was then seeded into another double elimination bracket. If you've already lost once, you'd be placed in the bracket at losers side.
