Conwell was a captain for the Union Army in the American Civil War, later earning a law degree. In 1884 in Philadelphia, Conwell began tutoring a local working-class printer who wanted an education but couldn't afford to quit his day job. Conwell then taught evening classes, which expanded and evolved into Temple College.
