$3/moMossWe are convinced that moss is the kindest ground covering. It makes the softest carpet for bare feet. Upon close observation, the variety of tiny, fern-like leaf shapes is astounding. It is adaptable, able to be pried up and happily transplanted on a nearby rock or stump. It appears to grow in networks, gladly filling in where nothing else seems to want to grow, yet it hospitably allows nearly anything to grow in its midst. It'll never try to steal the show, but if you pay it any close attention at all, you'll leave its presence feeling loved.
$5/moRhododendronThe rhododendron that grow on the wooded patch of land where we live are wildly alert-looking and stretched, always reaching upward for the light. Among all the towering trees that surround us, they are a welcome anchor, a source of beauty closer to eye level. Every spring they delight us first with their sculptural buds which resemble clusters of cut jewels. The flowers that follow are light as air; perfect attire for fairies and miniature ballerinas. In the winter, their evergreen leaves roll up tight under ice like sleek cigarettes, and flatten back out after the thaw. Even in their reliable seasonal patterns, the rhododendrons never cease to procure wonder.
$10/moWhite OakThe white oaks growing around our home and studio are tall and straight. To stand at the foot of one and look up is to be near to a steady friend. They are sturdy: their height is a testament to their steadfastness. Who knows what all they witnessed in the years that unfolded before we landed here. As wise and tall as they are now, it is hard to imagine them as a young vulnerable shoot springing up from an acorn buried and forgotten by a scatterbrained squirrel. We have come to rely on their kind shadows. Outside of the haven of their cover temperatures vary drastically. They stand by patiently as we clumsily learn how to steward this small patch of land we inhabit.
$25/moLichenIn its subtle hues ranging from robin's egg to muted sage, the lichen on our lot never ceases to draw a smile. Its invitation to step closer always ends with our gaze directed skyward, following the line of the trunk on which it has chosen to grow. We can't resist touching its sculptural ruffles and layers. Light as air but sturdy enough to ascend to great heights, lichen is a dependable companion in these shady woods we live in. Always near, but never smothering. One more of nearly infinite layers of beauty in these pop-up book woods.
$50/moAcornThe darling of the forest, adored baby of the woods, gathered by every child that lives near an oak for play food or currency or tiny finger hats. When you find one, whole, pristine and by itself, you cannot help but pick it up, feeling its smooth, rotund bottom with your fingertips and studying the satisfyingly perfect radial spiral of its cap. You think to yourself, "This is a wonder," before setting it down to do its work, to be food or to begin its long transformation underground. The acorn is adorable, yes, but never underestimate its potential to create enormous beauty that will generate still more of its kind every year.
$100/moMyceliumThe invisible connection between all growing things? How is it that these mysterious subterranean networks are not the talk of all dinner parties everywhere? These hairlike roots weave their way underneath the entirety of the forest floor, connecting to the roots of all living things, channels for the sharing of nutrients, for communication. The extent of what they make possible for all life in the forest we can never know. They are the earth's quiet mystery of vitality, content to remain completely hidden from view as they serve the expansion and nourishment of all things.
