It’s ComingPumpkin spice everything is available in the store is already. And have I had the good sense to avoid it? No I have not. I have mostly learned that I don’t like any of the pumpkin spice flavored things that are offered this time of year. But I went to the store to buy some organizing things for the new place (the move is over except for the hanging artwork and organizing a few spare parts), and came out with some maple pecan hand soap that smelled better in my imagination than real life.ImageAug 24, 2024Public 0 0Puppy PortraitsJul 31, 2024ArticleJul 31, 2024Public 0 0An Albatross Around...the Elk RiverIf you like the idea of checking out submerged shipwrecks, but don't actually want to dive to see one, the Albatross in the Elk River just across from the kayak launch in Elk Rapids is for you. It sank in 1916, and rests in just 10' of water. Some days the visibility is better than others, but in such shallow water, the view is always good enough. And I've never been when I haven't been able to watch some fish dart about, which is my favorite part.ImageJul 29, 2024Public 0 0High Five to a Great SummerWe’ve been having a chaotic summer, filled with lots of Up North activities. Yesterday was a real highlight - we took the kids to snorkel a shipwreck in the Elk River (photos/video of the wreck coming soon). Aside from being a cool thing to do, it’s so gratifying to note their improved swimming skills. At the beginning of the season, they could kind of doggy paddle. Yesterday they swam in open water well over their heads with fins and snorkels and explored a shipwreck. Woohoo!VideoYesterday at Sep 3 crawlPublic 0 0Foggy Crescent Moon at TwilightEvery so often someone I know on social media posts a silly photo with a loved one with an apology: Sorry for the pic but we had to, or Sorry but she insisted, or Sorry I know I look like crap.ImageJuly 14Public 0 0Sailing Through the Changing Ocean TidesPhoto is from the beach in Elberta. We escaped there for a few days earlier this summer when Traverse City was in the 90’s and our air conditioner was out. 🥵ImageyesterdayPublic 0 2Join for free 6 Share Gift LockedNo public preview was captured for this post.Articleyesterday$3 tier & up 0 0Springing AlongThe forests are just starting to wake up around here. I’ve found a few models, the spring ephemerals are blooming, and leaflets have formed on the trees. It won’t take long before everything really springs back to life, and the lakeshore is covered in all the greens.ImageApr 30, 2024Public 0 0In a RowIt’s been raining since yesterday around noon, and I keep thinking it’s going to let up and allow me to cross things off my to do list, but I keep being wrong. My ducks are consigned to chaos I guess. Hope your week is just ducky!Articleyesterday at Sep 3 crawlPublic 0 0Dune RiseYou know how people ask you how you're doing, and the default is to say you're fine even if you're not really, because you just don't have it in you to explain? Or maybe answering honestly is just oversharing? Well, I'm fine.ArticleApr 26, 2024Public 0 0Not Yet, But SoonI saw reports of morels being found in northern Manistee county over the weekend. April is early for mushroom hunting Up North, but maybe not this year. April is generally a month of wishing the ice would clear off the trails already. It feels like we didn’t get enough snow this winter - and definitely not enough snow pack - to create those typical icy conditions. So, the orchards are not in bloom yet, but they’ll surely be earlier than middle May!ArticleApr 11, 2024Public 0 0
