In highschool and college I found them to be great tools to force me to finish a drawing. It forced me to think critically to plan things out ahead of time, because you cant undo a line in ink. I hadnt ever done this sort of work before so it was a definite learning curve. Thankfully the person who commissioned me wanted me to use an anime character as reference. That reference helped me realize how important exaggerated features are for small imaged. It really helps their "readability"? Would you call it that?
